It was another great day here in Grade 1/2 world. The students are so wonderfully quiet and calm, being respectful to the needs of the chick eggs. My goodness! We should have them in here all the time-it's a wonderful classroom management trick!! The moment I ask the class, "Do you all think this noise level is ok for our babies?", they quieten down. By the way, last week, I didn't even have to say this.... Anyways, we were busy learning and playing in here again today:
-Math. We started MEASUREMENT today. We talked about what measuring/measurement/to measure means and why we need to measure. Then we got to explore with some measurement tools like rulers, snap cubes, volume/capacity containers, scales and measuring tapes. This is usually a fun unit in these grades...not so much about calculating perimeters, area and volume yet.
*At home you may want to play I SPY using measurement terms like longer, shorter, heavier and lighter. For example, you might say, "I'm looking at something that is heavier than a fork". Another game is ask your child to decide which of two things are heavier; for example, a potatoe or a carrot.
-Healthy Body. Their booklets are coming home today. I'm so proud of their hard work.
Today we continued with our learning about body safety. They are coming home with 3 stapled half sheets to give you a basic outline of what they learned today and last week when Jessica Wollen, the certified sexual health educator came to talk to the class. Jess was fabulous by the way. She taught them to say "Interesting" when she talked about private parts (those areas covered by a swimsuit). She read a book called, "What the Big Secret" as a springboard for the various topics she covered. Jess has a pinterest page if you'd like more information: http://pinterest.com/shifteducation/
I asked all the students to write what they learned in their own words at the back of that half sheet coming home today, so don't forget to flip it over to read it.
-Reader's Theatre--our latest group, Julia, Ellen, Will, Lauren, Lucas, Gavin, Marc & Nicole did a fantastic job with "The Nightingale". This story prompted a wonderful discussion about letting people be free, treating people/things the way they want to be treated, making others happy just because, etc. Both Ebony and I were impressed with their level of understanding. They performed it to Ms. Kochan's Kindergarten class too.
-Journals--they wrote about their weekend.
-Computers ---Mr.A had a guest teacher today and he did computers with them.
-Library--most students got new books...it's always a favourite time to go down there and choose new reading.
Did you know that there are about 6 weeks of school left??
Have a great Wednesday and Thursday, I'll see everyone on Friday...Sport's Day!!!
