I hope everyone has been enjoying their weekend. It has been a bit rainy, but with good boots, and a jacket the fresh air has been wonderful. My husband said on the Grouse Grind there has been snow and at the top, people are already skating and playing in the snow! So just a reminder about boots (snow or rain), it is very important that children have indoor shoes to change into. The carpets in the classroom get very muddy when we wear our big boots into the class. We do a lot of learning sitting on the carpet so for the children's sake, indoor shoes is very much appreciated!
I am sending out a compliment to all the children from Ms. Bailey. Ms. Bailey substituted two times these last two weeks when I had to take days off. She said the children were AWESOME! I have noticed that for the most part the children have learned to be responsible citizens in the classroom. They are respectful and kind to each other in the classroom. They are learning to take this type of positive behaviour out to the playground as well. Perhaps a gentle discussion with your children about the words No, Stop, I dont like that ....and other words to use when they dont like what someone is doing instead of using their hands to stop it. This will definitely help them be happier inside and outside the classroom.
These last two weeks we have had Deana, our aboriginal support teacher come in and teach the children about the Cedar tree. We heard a story about how important the Cedar tree is to the Indigenous People. We looked at cedar items that Deana brought in and then looked at some cedar clippings that I brought in. The children did some beautiful writing that you must come in and see.
We also read a story called the Six Cedar Trees. Each tree had an animal that spoke to the Eagle. Each animal represented one important aspect of Social and Emotional Learning. We looked at the book as a whole and then will be discussing each animal and their characteristics. We will be talking about the wolf and how he communicates. The wolf is a great communicator. He knows that communicating is important to state needs and wants. We will be learning how to be good communicators like the wolf!
Last week Jung came in and we talked about how a baby communicates. A baby communicates by crying. The children drew some very adorable pictures that Jung will make into a book...about why the baby cries. By the end of this year your child will be a great communicator!! (Hopefully not by just crying!! haha)
Thank you so much for all the gifts that have been sent in for our refugee family. Our LOVE hamper is looking very loving!! We have till the morning of December 4th to bring in gifts, gift cards and food items. If you are sending a gift card please have your child bring it directly to me and I will be placing it in the gift box at the end. I wouldnt want it to go missing. If you are wondering what to send, please come in and take a look at the boxes. I am planning to sort the boxes by the individual family members to see what is still needed. Thank you so much for supporting your child's understanding and growth in the sense of being socially responsible. This is another one of the Core competencies.
Enjoy the pictures of the children looking at Deana's cedar headbands. They were all so amazed that the bark of cedar could be so soft!
Have a great day! See you all tomorrow.
