Good Morning to everyone!
What a lovely day it is today!!! We were so very lucky that this beautiful weather started just in time for our field trip!!
The kids were excellent on our field trip to the UBC Farms. A big thank you to the parents who drove and stayed with us to supervise the children. The children were very keen and asked a lot of questions. The chickens were a hit, especially the ones who poked their little beaks through the fence to untie laces!!
I am posting some pictures that I took for all of you who were not able to attend. It was a great time had by all.
Enjoy the pictures. Sorry I didnt take more...I tend to forget when I am mesmerized myself.

Listening to Kalie talk about the Cobb House

Sucking Nectar from the flowers.

Looking at the compost bins

We saw how good soil is made.

It does not smell very nice!

We got to hold some worms. (red wigglers)

WE learned about how the bees pollinate the plants at the farm.

The farm chickens each lay about one egg a day...there are 150 chickens. You do the math!!

The children and the parents loved the chickens.

Hello parents,
I hope everyone has had a great weekend! It didnt rain! A great thumbs up!! I have my fingers crossed that tomorrow will also be a rain free day as it is our field trip to the ubc farms.
Thank you to all who volunteered to drive...sorry that I had to say no to so many of you, but I promise that I will use...not to worry!! i love volunteers!!!
For tomorrows field trip to ubc, our plan is to leave at around 1140 as the field trip starts at 1215 till 215. We will eat our lunch earlier in the classroom and then get ready to leave.
It is very important for tomorrows field trip that everyone bring their carseats, have them labelled with their name on it, and leave it below their hooks outside of the classroom. Please ensure that your child is dressed weather appropriately. Warm jackets, perhaps rain gear, hats but no umbrellas, boots whether it is raining or sunny as the fields are likely muddy. We will be spending the entire time outdoors, so mittens would also be a good idea.
I will be reviewing Bayviews expectations for behaviour while on a field trip. I would appreciate it if you would also go through behavioural expectations with your child as well.
This is a short blog, but i will include pictures from last week.
See everybody tomorrow,
teri

  • Travel south on Wesbrook Mall and continue south through the roundabout at Wesbrook Mall & 16th Ave. Turn right on Grey Ave (there is a large UBC Farm sign at that intersection), right on Ross Drive, and the entrance will be on your left.

Good Morning everyone!
I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! We were fortunate to get more sun than the weather man initially thought, which allowed me to go for a few hikes with my family and even was able to go on a picnic on Sunday up in Squamish! So lovely to still be spending time outdoors with the family!!

We had a great week at school. The children were very settled and as a result had some very productive days. I brought in a pumpkin and we investigated it. We cut the top off and looked at the different parts of a pumpkin then the children were asked to make their own pumpkin out of paper and label all the parts of the pumpkin. Some children even extended their project by writing what the parts of the pumpkins job is. They did a great job! Then we tried a science project that I saw online. It said to some compost into the cut pumpkin and water it and then see if the seeds that are nestled inside the strands of pulp will sprout. That is what we are hoping for. The children started peeking into the pumpkin almost right after we put the soil in. It was very cute. On Friday while the Grade twos were baking their very delicious apple loaf, the grade ones did some writing and reading about what they already knew about pumpkins. Their treat for writing was to create some beautiful water colour paintings of pumpkins afterwards. Better than candy! Next week we will look at the life cycle of a pumpkin.

In Math the Grade ones are looking at numbers to thirty. We are practicing printing our numbers without reversing them to 30. We will be looking at how numbers to 20 are constructed and will be using language like....15 is ten and how many more? If you can work on your numbers at home forwards and backwards to 30 that would be very helpful to your child. The grade twos are looking at numbers to 100. They are working on answering and writing what comes before a number, what comes behind a number. They looked at the greater than, less than symbols on Thursday. For the grade twos to feel comfortable with numbers to 100 forwards and backwards is the goal for the next little while.

In Art we did a directed drawing of a Scarecrow head. Then we used very special watercolour liquids to paint them in. They will be put up in our hallway very soon. They all have their own unique personalities.

In Buddies we have been working with Mr. A's class. Every week we enjoy meeting a new buddy, talking to them, laughing with them and often doing an art project with them. This week we are trying to FALLIFY our hallways. Mrs. Farrel (our acting principal) is very excited to see our beautiful fall leaves.

Thank yous:
1) To all the people who brought in food for our Food Bank. Wow. We filled five boxes. Thank you soooo much.
2) To all my lunch parents. We appreciate you!
3) To my cooking parents. The children love to cook and couldnt do it without you!

Reminders:
1)Please send back the permission slip for our field trip to the UBC farms.
2) Early Dismissal on Tuesday and Wednesday (200PM). This is when our Parent Teacher interviews will be held. Children are not invited to this conference.

With that enjoy your Sunday, I will see you on Monday.

A happy belated Thanksgiving to everyone.
I hope everyone enjoyed a feast and fun with their families.
I spent yesterday cooking for two vegans, one vegetarian and 10 traditional turkey feasters. I have so many different types of leftovers and a very full belly and an even fuller heart! It is always so wonderful to get together with family and friends and just simply appreciate each other. We talked about that this past week with the children. WE made a thankful quilt. WE worked with our buddies and talked about what things we were thankful for, and if you walk outside of the library area, you will see a giant turkey with some awesome turkey feathers filled with thankful words. I would just like to say how thankful I am for all the wonderful children and all the supportive parents we have in this room.  When parents, children and the school all work together the harmony is evident. So thank you for that!

This next week we will be beginning a look at pumpkins. WE will learn how to lable the inside and outside of a pumpkin. WE will do pumpkin writing and pumpkin art. And in two weeks Monday, October 26th we will be going on a field trip to the UBC farms to talk about harvesting vegetables, how vegetables and fruit grow, what a farm is, how organic gardening is done ....and then this will lead us into the mulching and planting of cover crops and garlic in our own school garden. I will be sending out a permission, information slip very soon for the field trip. There will be no charge for this field trip as we have been granted some money from the PAC so all I will be needing is drivers and signed permission slips.

Thank you to:
1) Everyone who has donated food for our Food Bank Drive. If you still want to support the Food Bank Drive we are collecting non-perishible items until this Friday.

2) To all the parents who have helped encourage the children to eat their lunches at lunch time. It isnt always easy. To the parents, please make sure that your child "like" what is being sent as they often will say, I HATE THIS! and then that makes it very difficult for the supervising parent. Also as we are encouraging healthy eating, please try not to pack, candies, chips, chocolate bars and pop....and try to find an alternative treat like a home baked cookie , fruit snacks etc. I sure appreciate everyone's efforts.

3) To Maggie and Maggie's family for donating a Todd Parr book to our classroom collection called, "It's Okay to make Mistakes". We love that book!

Finally a reminder:
Parent Teacher conferences are next Tuesday and Wednesday. If you havent signed up for a time and you would like to come in and talk to either Catherine or myself, send me an email and I will slot you in for a time.

With that, have a wonderful week!
Teri

Good morning families,
I hope everyone has been outside, enjoying the sunshine! It sure was beautiful yesterday!
I would like to take this time to apologize to everyone about the virus I got. I am mortified that it happened. Not being overly computer literate, I am still confused how it happened and how to fix it. At this time I am writing on my iPad and then sending the link to our class rep Michelle mclatchy (Theron's mom) so you can still get the news.
As Michelle has stated already you can contact me at ttaylor@vsb.bc.ca and I will check that email regularly. Sorry for the inconvenience to you!

In the two days that I was at school last week we were busy!
We looked at a couple of new Todd parr stories. One about feelings and one about the dos and donts of wearing underwear (a humorous book, but not only about underwear)
We then did a few projects based on these stories. We spent a lot of time talking about different feelings that we may have, including a new feeling that Brody heard the feeling of hangry. To be angry because one is hungry! We wrote about different feelings and did some feeling art on Friday! The children were very good at expressing their feelings and talking about appropriate reactions to different feelings!

On Friday one group of grade ones also got to make applesauce and we had a taste test. Ayana said that she loved that we made it ourselves and when we make things ourselves, things taste so much better. Well said Ayana! Some children did the tongue test. Which means you swirl the tongue through the sauce just to get a feeling of what it might taste like. These were the children who said they were certain they would not like it! I like to encourage just trying it. It takes twent tries before the brain thinks, aha, I love it! Next week the other group will make pear sauce and we will compare our two taste tests. Thank you to my cooking moms!

For the next two weeks our class along with our buddy class is sponsoring a food bank drive. We are asking all the children to contribute non perishable items like pastas, rice, cereals, beans, coffee, soup etc to this wonderful project. We talked to the children about how many families in the lower mainland struggle to make ends meet and often there are families who need to rely on the food banks regularly. We are hoping we can make a contribution to the food bank to help make someone's thanksgiving a little happier! Thank you!

With that, I hope everyone enjoys their Sunday. I will see everyone tomorrow!
