Hello everyone,
Can you believe that it is our last week of school? Time sure flies when you are having fun!!
Only five more days of school and then it is time for the winter holidays!! Believe me even though it is our last day of school we will be very busy, working but having fun as well!!

This last week we talked about how the Mexican people celebrate their holidays. They start with having 9 days of posadas (parties) prior to the 25th where the children carry a figurine of Joseph and Mary into the different houses asking for a shelter. When someone finally agrees to let them in, the celebrating begins. The children enjoyed learning about Mexico and especially enjoyed eating the bunnelos (a traditional Mexican donuty treat made of masa harina) that the grade one children made. They were very delicious!!! This week we will end our study of Xmas's around the world with a look at how the Italians celebrate their holidays.

This week also had us looking at our customs and how we celebrate some of the things that we do. We talked about Christmas trees, Santa and our very popular reindeer, Rudolph. The children have been spending time writing, reading and creating artwork to go along with the various activities.

This next week:
1. Off to a Running Start has been replaced with Off to a Singing Start. We will be going down in to the gym on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to sing Christmas Carols. We will go down as soon as the second bell rings, so if you are arriving late, just go directly the gym and we will be there singing away!!! Fallalalalla!!
2. Tomorrow, Monday, December 16th, we will be making our Gingerbread Houses. If your child did not bring a milk carton or a piece of cardboard or candy....it is not a problem. We have been given some extras so don't worry at all. You can be the one to give extra next time. It will be a fun full afternoon activity. We will likely start around 130 and go right till 300. Often we like to let everything set up before taking it home, but if you are there to pick them up (and they are not going to JKC) then you are more than welcome to take their little masterpieces home with you. JKC kids can maybe get their parents to come up in the morning and get them the next day.
3.This Thursday, December 19th is our annual Pancake Breakfast. The children are invited to come in their pajamas and with empty bellies as we will take them downstairs first thing in the morning for a feast of pancakes. If your child does not like pancakes, then make sure they have eaten before hand. They can just sit there and socialize while they wait for that special someone in "red"!!
4. This Friday, December 20th, your child will be taking their report cards home. I am very proud of how hard they have worked this term and have been very delighted by their efforts and achievements. I am sure you will be too.
5. This Friday we will end our first term off with an afternoon of movies and popcorn (provided by me). We will pick a movie that all of us like... i will bring in a few to choose from...if you have any vhs that you would like to suggest, send them in too. And at 300 the children will be dismissed to their parents until January 6th.

If you have any questions that you need clarified please feel free to stop by and see me or email me.
Before i sign off, I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to our love boxes. The families who received the hampers were so pleased by the generosity of our families.Thank you again from them and from me.

And with that I would like to wish everyone a very merry Xmas and a happy New Year! Thank you for trusting me with your children and allowing me the pleasure of having them with me for the last four months. It has been a delight. I look forward to hearing all the exciting stories in the New Year!
Take care of yourselves, stay healthy,
Teri

Good Morning everyone!
Another beautiful, sunny and crisp day. Brrrrrrrring it on! I am ready for the sun as long as i am bundled up (which I am)!!! The mountains are starting to become whiter and whiter...this is one sign of winter and the winter holiday break. The children are very excited as we have been really talking a lot about the holidays and how different people celebrate the holidays. It all started with Andrew coming in. Andrew is Annie's dad and he came in to talk about Hannukah. He read some stories, he lit the Mennorah and then handed out some delicious donuts called.......(starts with an s), but they were delicious. Then he helped out in the kitchen with the grade two children to make some latkes, which were all gobbled up, by the kids and the teachers as well. They were yummy. In the afternoon Annie played the dreidle game with all the children in small groups. The kids loved playing the game and thank you Annie, you were a great teacher!

This last week we have gone to the library and learned about how they celebrate Christmas in Germany, and the different traditions and celebrations there. We got to try a gingerbread cookie, the tradition of making and eating gingerbread cookies originated in Germany. The next day we learned about how the Swedish people celebrate Christmas. We learned about Saint Lucia and the Tomten. Then a group of grade ones along with Samara's and Matthew's mom made Rice Pudding, a traditional favourite holiday treat for the swedish people. The kids loved it, even though it was slightly overcooked, but it was still gobbled up with pleasure. Next week we will be travelling to Mexico to learn about their traditions and we will be making some delicious donuty cinnamony yummy treat called Buenelos (i think that is the spelling), but I understand they are very tasty too.

Meanwhile in the classroom we have been talking about our own traditions. And of course we all wanted to talk about Santa Claus. So we talked about him, wrote about him and made some amazing cute paintings of him (which you will soon see). The classroom is starting to transform into a holiday classroom...slowly!

We will be very busy in the classroom doing a lot of writing, reading and crafting to bring in the holidays. On Monday, December16th we will be making our own gingerbread houses. To facilitate one of my most favourite activities of the year I will be needing some supplies. Every child will need to bring in a 250 ml milk carton emptied and rinsed out ( no other size will work), also an 8 by 8 inch piece of cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil, with the child's name on the top written in sharpie. The children are also asked to bring in some candy to share with all the kids to help decorate their gingerbread houses. Great things to bring in are smarties, lifesavers, candy canes, fruit jellies, little candies, chocolate chips, marshmellows, pretzels, etc....anything you think they would like to put on their house. What I do is i take all the candies donated and i divide them up amongst all the children to share the variety. You do not need to send all of the above just a small little ziplock full. I am asking that everyone bring all the items for me by next Friday so that I can get the little milk cartons glued to the cardboard and be ready to go for Monday afternoon. If anyone would like to join us next Monday you are more than welcome.

Finally a big thank you to:
1. Scott for bringing in the Rocks and Minerals workshop a couple of weeks ago. I took some excellent pictures, but our camera had a little accident, so I cannot post them. The kids were fantastic and learned a lot of very interesting stuff about rocks. I think we may have some budding geologists!

2. That very same day we had a bat workshop. Thank you to Ronnie who came in from SFU to hold a little workshop about bats for us. The children played bat jeopardy, learned a lot about bats and then made some very cute bat puppets.

Something to write in your calendar and maybe start thinking ahead....
Feb 13th, 20th, 27th and March 6th (all Thursdays) are our skating days. We will need tons of drivers and tons of lacers for these four skating times. I am hoping that many of you may take some afternoons off from work to join us if you know in advance.

And with that...sorry that there are no pictures...awwwwww...
And i will see everyone tomorrow,
Enjoy your sunny day!!

our found poems and art creations.
our senses poetry
Good Morning,
What a beautiful and sunny weekend we are having! The cold is easy to manage because you can bundle up from top to toe. No rain is always such a wonderful thing to wake up to!! As it is rather cold, this is a reminder to please send your children to school with warm jackets, maybe mittens and hats as they are expected to go outside during recess and lunch for fresh air. If all items are labelled it does make it easier to ensure that we know whose mittens belong to whom (does that make sense??)

A big thank you to everyone for the contributions to our love hampers. Lucia's (boy) and Maria's families are going to be very happy when they receive our gifts of love. We will continue to take contributions till December 7th, so if you would like to give the families some gifts or food items, then we will gratefully accept them.

We have had a very busy week at school learning about bats. We have worked with Natalie and have now written three different types of Bat poems. The first was a senses poem, the second was a found poem and the third was an acrostic poem. Ask your child if they know what types of poems these are. They have done an incredible job on their poetry and have really enjoyed working with Natalie on this Poetry unit. We have also discussed why a bat is considered a mammal and not a bird and completed a project to show their understanding. Ask your child if they can think of the five things that makes a bat a mammal. Your children are very very clever and should know this!!

On Monday afternoons (from 230-300) we have been learning how to fill our buckets and how to fill other's buckets. We also know that we do not want to be a bucket dipper!! Pauline a youth and family worker from Kitsilano comes in and has a very interactive lesson with the children where they talk about their feelings of the day and things that they did that day that filled other's buckets. We read a very good book on this today that gave the children a clearer picture of what this is.

We will continue to learn about Bats for the next couple of weeks.  We will also be starting our holiday unit where we will learn how other countries celebrate their Christmas's.
We are starting this next week by having Annie's dad, Andrew in to talk about Hannukah. He will be visiting us on Friday and celebrate Hannukah with us. He will tell us the story of Hannukah, we will eat some special donuts, and then the grade two's will make delicious latkes for us all to sample. I can't wait.

This next week will be full of visitors and it will be starting on Monday.
Here's our schedule for next week:
Monday:
Compaigni V'ni Dance will be presenting a one day dance, games and story telling workshop that will celebrate the Metis culture. We will learn a dance at 900 am till 1000 am and then everyone will regroup at 200 till 300 to share all the dances that we have learned with each other. I think we are very lucky to have this opportunity!
Thursday:
Starting at 900 am and going till noon we will be participating in a Geology Workshop. We will be doing a hands on workshop with rocks and minerals. We will have the opportunity to look at many rocks and pretend to be geologists for the morning. Thank you to Simon's family for organizing and sponsoring this excellent workshop.

From 100 till 300 we will then be having a BAT WORKSHOP. Ronnie from the Urban Ecology Center at Douglas College will be leading this informative workshop. She has done this workshop in my class before and is excellent at sharing her passion and knowledge about bats with us.

Friday:
Our Hannukah presentation with Andrew.

As you can see we have a wonderful, busy, exciting week ahead of us.
Stay healthy and we will see you all on Monday!

Hi Parents,
Your kiddies had a very busy day Tuesday. We began with a morning run in which some students ran 4 laps. Most students were running consistently and were very motivated.

Nora (Angelina B’s mom) helped our groups out with readers theatre and the new plays are coming along great. Our ‘Little Red Hen’ group performed in front of Ms. Kochan’s class. They did a great job getting the K’s and Division 10 to giggle by just making the expression of the characters a little unpredictable.

The students have almost completely learned how to find a core in a pattern, expand and develop a pattern, determine the terms and describe a pattern.

In journals today we first read a book called ‘The way I am’. The students then shared what they like about themselves. Answers varied but here are a few:

I like myself because...:
...I am good at catching bugs.
...I am a girl.
...I can fix stuff.
...I am very smart.
...I can draw and bike fast.
...of my spelling and because I can run fast and because I can do Karate.
...I like that my friends are nice to me.
...I can draw pumpkins and draw bats.
...I lost a tooth.
...I can carve a pumpkin
...I am a boy
...I am good at writing and math.
...I can do the splits.
...I like how I’m dressed.
...I am good at speaking other languages
...I can play jingle bells on the piano.
...I am so funny and goofy and silly.

In Health and Career, students worked on goal setting today. We spoke about setting a goal (buying a toy or improving certain skills like running and soccer) and expanded on actions we need to take in order to achieve that goal. Many students are well on their way to understanding goal setting!

That is all for now.

Hope everyone enjoys a sunny week!

Good Morning Parents,
I hope everyone is have a day full of Peace and love and thoughtfulness. I also hope that the children are filling your bucket as well as filling their own. They have learned these terms from one of our guest teachers who will be coming in on Monday afternoons to talk about Bucket Filling. If you hear the children talking about Pauline....this is our Youth and Family Worker from Kitsilano Area that will be doing this program. It is a valuable program that will help the children talk about peaceful and helpful ways to make not only their day better, but others around them happier as well.

Our class has been lucky that we have been able to have so many people in to share their expertises with us. For the last few months we have had a wonderful volunteer named Natalie come in to our class. She is a very enthusiastic writer and poet and really wanted to share her passion with the children. So together we created our Bat Poetry unit. The children experienced Bat sounds, talked about all the senses that a Bat would use in his daily life and after a very involved hands on discussion with Natalie, the children sat down and wrote some amazing five senses poems that are going up in the classroom. Come in and take a peek.

We also had the opportunity, once again to have Catriona (from Spec) come in. She did a morning on leaves. They talked about simple leaves, versus compound leaves. They looked at veins on the leaves, the shape of leaves, the function of leaves and even some of the names of leaves. After talking about leaves they played a little detective game where they had to ask questions of a partner and then try figure out what type of leaf they had that was taped on their back and then draw what they thought...then to look at the leaf that was on their back and see if they were accurate. After they were given a bunch of leaves and they had to determine if they were compound, simple, palmate etc....They loved the lesson and they loved having Catriona come in. This is the last of our Catriona sessions for this year. We will be planning a few more lessons for the winter and spring in 2014. Stay tuned for some awesome lessons!!

This week we did many activities on Rembrance Day. We did Remembrance Day writing, art and poetry. Our culmination of Remembrance Day was an amazing assembly. Didn't our children look so beautiful and handsome??? It always brings a smile and a tear to my eye. Their ability to do the Poppy Procession after such a short practice time, along with Ms. Jung's class was beautiful.

Believe it or not this Friday we started a poster that our class is making for the winter craft market that Bayview has had for the last few years. Soon you will see some beautiful Grinch art (oxymoron????) up throughout the school. Our Bayview Market this year will be held on December 7th...so stay tuned for more information.

Sent home by hard copy on Friday was some information on two families that we are providing Love Hampers for. Bayview traditionally collects for families from the Hastings area to provide them with some Holiday extras that they may not normally get. Due to the size of the families I agreed to take on two families. I would like to focus on the children and food. We have one girl (8 years old....Maria) and one boy Lucia (6 years old) and then the families. I will have two boxes going one for each family and then a box for food that i will divide up between the two families. If you are choosing to give gift certificates, give them to me and I will hold on to them so that they don't get "taken" or "lost".

Thank you again for reading all the information on the blog and for being such active and participatory parents. I love it! and I love your kids!!
Take care and give them all a hug from me!!
Teri

Lest we forget!

AS the computer is glitching.....I did want to add more pics...but will try at a later date...there are some great ones of our little scientists at work!!! argh argh...

Dear Parents,
Nice day with your kiddies.
Off to a running start was cancelled due to slippery conditions.

Your children started the day off with finishing up math, Halloween language arts and health and career work. The completed work was sent home with them yesterday for you to enjoy.

In keeping with Remembrance Day awareness, the students watched a video from the song "Pittance of Time". We talked about the importance of taking two minutes on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour to remember those who sacrificed their lives so we can live free. We went on to discuss how to write a thank you letter. The students wrote a thank you letter to a soldier thanking them for fighting the 'bad guys' so they could be free. The second half of the letter was to tell the soldier how they enjoy their freedom through playing in the park with friends, eating candy, playing sports etc.

Your children are really coming along in patterns. I am very happy with their progress in being able to determine the core of a pattern, the number of terms, describing the pattern extending a pattern. We will be finishing up this unit in the next few weeks; Great job kids!

Concerning Readers Theatre, thank you to Norah who has volunteered to help out our groups. The group to be performing to Ms. Kochan's class next week is The Teeny Tiny Woman group.

That is all for now. Have a great week!

Sunday, November 3, 2013

Good Morning everyone,
I hope everyone enjoyed their extra hour of sleep, not to mention all this beautiful sunshine!!
We had an amazing week last week, filled with excitement, singing (during our Sigmund Brower presentation) and lots of  hands on activities.
We spent the entire week looking at pumpkins. We read pumpkin stories, looked at pumpkin pictures and talked about pumpkin life cycles. We read factual information about pumpkins, did some pumpkin experimenting (does it float or sink, it is heavier/lighter than....and used our five senses to describe), did some pumpkin poetry and finally ended our week with some pumpkin art, using oil pastels as well as chalk pastels...but we are not finished with our pumpkins...next week we will paint them and they will be part of our Remembrance Day assembly, this art project is called Pumpkins for Peace...wait till you see them.

Next week:
1. We will be beginning our Bat Unit. If you have any bat books, bat paraphanalia to send in, you are more than welcome

2. We will be talking about Remembrance Day and why we spend  time thinking about what happened. WE will be focusing on Peaceful things and peaceful activities. This Friday we will be having our Remembrance Day assembly at 1100 in the gym. I hope you will be able to attend as we always are invited to do the poppy procession with our friends in Ms. Jung's class...so lovely, it will bring a tear to your eye. The children are all asked to wear black, white and red for this assembly and try to stay clean till the assembly is over.

3. This Thursday Catriona will be in to do a lesson on leaves. This lesson will help set us up for our field trip to the Pacific Spirit Park, the week after. If your child can bring in 6 different leaves...(not all oak, or all maple, ) that would be great.

Reminders:
1. Lice, in classroom, please do lice checks daily right now.
2. Send in the money and permission slips for the field trip. asap.

And with that I am going out to play in the sun and I will see you tomorrow,
Teri

Sunday, October 27, 2013

Good Morning Parents and children,
Are you enjoying the beautiful sunshine?? The rain that fell last night must have cleared the sky of all that spooky fog and brought us some lovely blue skies. I for one, after writing this blog, will be going for a nice long walk on the seawall. Its so lovely to not have to colour in a square of our calendar in green...for pea soup fog!!

So we have had a great last week.
Our week started off with a visit from Elaine a nutritionalist who is sponsored by Kins Market and Cobbs Breads to spread the word on Healthy living and Healthy eating. So on Monday morning Elaine came in and talked about eating all the colours of the rainbow. She talked about the nutrional values in many of the foods and told the children that the brighter and darker the colour of the fruit or vegetable, the better it would be for you. She showed the children and told the children how many of each of the food groups they should be getting and then after a lively and hearty discussion, the children all left with a sample of a mandarin orange and a beautiful slice of fruit bread. The children were very enthused and excited about the workshop and hopefully it will show by the enthusiasm that they will have in maybe helping select more darker fruits and vegies to consume at home!

This week we talked about Scarecrows. We read some scarecrow stories, then drew some scarecrows, which led us to writing about scarecrows. When we do writing activities we do lots of brainstorming first, and talking about what can we tell or say about what we are going to write about. After discussing it as a group, with each other, then drawing our scarecrows...we then begin the writing process. Brainstorming ideas really helps the children when they begin their own writing...stops the "I don't know what to write about" scenario. I hope you have an opportunity to take a look at their writing. They really are all coming along so amazingly. Some even wrote on the back of the paper. OnThursday we used Water Colour Liquids to create a close up shot of our Scarecrows. I put them up early Friday morning before my workshop (which was a science based workshop)....many great ideas to be used later in the year.

An issue that has been coming up this year has been lunches.
Some of the children are so hungry at recess that they consume all their lunch at that time and when lunch comes around, and they are hungry again, they don't have anything to eat. I have talked to some of the children and suggested that they try to eat a bigger brekky, only take one snack outside and /or to talk to their parents about packing a little bit extra for those hungry birds. They are growing. Ask your child if they are needing some extras in their lunch. Also a few have complained that what they are getting, they don't really like and will refuse to eat it. Please again talk to your child and maybe you can build their lunch together...let them help you so that there are no complaints...i appreciate the support.

Next week:
1. We will be studying pumpkins all week. I have purchased one pumpkin for each child (thank you to a donation made by a parent to do these little extras) and we will be drawing them, cutting them, exploring them and then finally painting them. This will be in lieu of many other scarier parts to Halloween....kids are just finally going to the washroom on their own...and I don't want to change that!
2. On Wednesday our super Y librarian has booked a presentation for the entire school which will start at 9:15 and will be help in the gym. The presenter is a rock and roll literacy expert by the name of Sigmund Brouwer. He will sing his way into our lives. He is a writer but he puts many things to music. The grade 6 and 7's saw him last year and apparently he is amazing. If you would like to come and see him, you are more than welcome to join us for the presentation.
3.On THursday, October 31st...halloween...there will be no off to a running start as we are inviting you to allow your child to dress up in a halloween outfit and join us once again in the gym for a Halloween Assembly. The children will have the opportunity to do a little parade of their outfits for the entire school. They will get to model as well as view all the other neat outfits that have been created. Please keep in mind that your child will have to be in their outfit all day long, so make sure it is comfortable. Also, please do not send any weapons or big things that might go with the costume that could get lost or broken or hurt someone else.
Thank you.

With that,
I hope you have a great day and enjoy the posted pictures.

Constable PatAllen, during our Pedestrian Safety talk
Hi Parents and Children,
Did I tell you how thankful I am for all the wonderful children that I am teaching this year.Thank you! Also a big thank you to all the parents who came and met with me for our Parent -Teacher conferences. It was so nice to see some dads as well as the moms for our chats. I loved telling you all about the successes that your child is achieving and I loved getting to know everyone. As I said to you all, we have an open door policy in our classroom, so anytime you would like to chat or come in to volunteer or visit, that door is always open. Feel free and welcome to come by. A continuing thank you to my lunch parents, the kids are eating and filling their bellies so that they have lots of energy for the afternoon, it is noticed. Thank you to my reading dad who comes in and listens to the children when he can. Thank you to my cooking mamas....we are making some wonderful things. And thank you for the continued donations to our classroom. We have filled three boxes for the Food Bank, just from our class alone. The boxes will be picked up at the end of this month, so if you haven't contributed and you still would like to, our boxes will still be available.

This week:
1. This Thursday we had The Great British Columbia Shake Out. This is an annual earthquake preparedness drill. We reviewed the basic rules of Drop and Cover and Count to 60. We were in the library when we had this drill, so we talked about how if there were to be an earthquake you would have to know what to do, wherever you were. We learned that the reason you count to 60 is that there might be aftershocks and you don't want to be going out of the school if there was still shaking going on. The children were calm, well behaved and took the drill seriously. You might want to discuss this further with your children.

2. This Friday morning we had Constable Pat Allen come in and talk to the children about Pedestrian Safety. The children were already pretty well informed, but the he did review the basic concepts of Stop, Look and Listen, before you cross the road. He also talked about the construction that will be occurring in the Bayview area very soon, and how they should be very careful while walking to school and leaving the school when this happens. Ask your child what they learned on this day.

3. The Grade 2's cooked some delicious Apple Brownies. The children were so excited to be sampling such delicious treats. We took some pictures of the cooks in action, so you will get to see the process, i forgot to take pictures of their big smiling faces as they ate these delicious and healthy apple brownies. I have extra recipes if you would like a copy (Angelina B. loved them so much that they took a copy and will be baking this weekend!)

4. We are continuing with our Todd Parr unit in the library and read the book, Peace, in the beautiful and funny Todd Parr style. Then we wrote about what we felt peace was like. Peace is reading a book with your mom, while snuggling in bed. We really encouraged the children not to use Peace is don't....., no negatives only positive images. I am holding onto them for now and will be putting them up in November for Rembrance Day.

5. The grade ones went and worked on the computers today while in the library and while the Grade 2's cooked. Computer will be scheduled till xmas on Fridays and in the library. They learned how to log on, find the Bayview website, and go on the starfall. Everyone just got to play and look at the starfall activities. They loved it!

6. In art we made owl windsocks to celebrate learning (based on the story Twoo Twit) and to celebrate Fall....they look very fally and will be hanging in the classroom on Monday!

7. If you walk past the office and even into the office you will see some beautiful fall leaves made by the buddy classes......they made Miss May very happy!!!

And with that ...enjoy your foggy filled day and each other and I will see everyone on Monday!!

Catriona helping the kids out
oliver and nicole work on their seed packages
Hi Parents and children and a happy belated Thanksgiving to everyone!
This blog would have gone out early this morning but as many of you might know already...but I worked today. Mrs. King had to go to Toronto so I was lucky to work today with the kids. Over the next few days I will hopefully have met with everyone for a parent teacher conversation. So far, I have really enjoyed chatting and getting to know all my new parents and revisiting with all my former parents. Thank you to everyone who has come in already and to those who I will see later on.

We have had a very busy last week with lots of fun and learning.
This week:
1. We worked with Mrs. Yamashita in the library and continued with our Todd Parr unit. We heard the story  The Thankful Book by Todd Parr and all did our own pages for a class book. We also watched some of his video clips on the Smart Board. I am very proud of how hard all the children are working on their drawings, their writing and their colouring. Very impressive.

2. We talked about being Thankful with our buddies and all created a patch that is exhibited outside of Mr. A's classroom. In fact all week we talked about being thankful...where i was thankful for having such a wonderful class, they seemed to all be very thankful for their wonderful families....I concur!

3. This week we had a visit from Catriona, our SPEC gardener. Did we have fun looking at seeds and making our own seed packets. We talked about seeds and how they all had a baby plant called an embryo growing inside of it, just waiting to be nurtured for planting in the gardens in the spring. All the children will be bringing home a seed packet next week. I will post many pictures of the fun that we had working on this activity. We certainly are lucky to have Catriona come in.

4. One of the grade one groups made chunky applesauce today which we tried. It definitely was delicious. So now all the grade ones have had an opportunity to make applesauce, which we will use later on in our cooking projects. So far almost everyone has paid their $15 for cooking, but we are still waiting for around five people to pay. Please send it in with your child if you haven't done so already.

5. We continue to have our spelling tests on Friday. The children have been so proud of their excellent marks on their tests. Keep practicing the words at home, it just gets easier and easier for them and it definitely helps them with their own reading and writing. You should see how independent they are getting to be!

So this week there was early dismissal today and there will also be an early dismissal at 200 tomorrow. During this time, you might want to visit the Scholastic Book Fair in the library. It will only be open again on Wednesday.

With that, I will see everyone again tomorrow and for the rest of the week.
Enjoy the pictures,
Teri

free play
Good Morning Families,
Yes this is what I do on my days off. I blog to you!
So to start off, I have to say how proud I am of all the boys and girls and how they are getting into their routines. They have been remembering to drop off their home reading in the morning, do their calendars and put them away and then begin the work that is on their desk until we get to the carpet. Yay!! Some of them are still requiring a little reminders to line up to pick up their items from their mail boxes to take home, which does include their home reading. So if you are not getting the home reading, that may be why...please help them remember. Also for parents who have children that go to daycare after, please encourage them not to pull out books and papers there as that is a great place for things to go missing!

This last week we:
1. Went to the library and talked about another Todd Parr book....called The Feel Good Book. Then we made our own Todd Parr inspired posters. They are beautiful and up inside the classroom.
2. We planted daffodils after talking about a daffodil and looking inside of a cut daffodil. We did some scientific sketches of the insides and learned how to label. Thankyou to Joanne (Simon's mom) who led a group of parents to help the kids plant these daffodils which will be beautiful in the spring.
3. We wrote about Fall and finished off some Fall pictures. The grade twos also read some facts about Fall to themselves, to each other and then had to do some writing about what they found interesting or what they have learned. All of this is in the hallway for your viewing pleasure.
4. One of the Grade one groups made applesauce ...thank you to Tania and Michelle ( who will be our grade one mom team leaders). WE all tried a little sample and it was very cinnamony...but very delicious.
5. We learned about Vincent Van Gogh and began our beautiful renditions of our Sunflowers...this is a work in progress and will be worked on all week. They are very beautiful.

We did much more including: Math, spelling, phonics, reading and writing, socials, music....Do you see how busy we are on a weekly basis???

Reminders:
1. Cooking money due in....$15. for supplies for the year. Any money left over at the end of the year goes to a homemade pizza party.

This is a message from Mr.A
In the spirit of Thanksgiving Divisions 4 and 10 are collecting food to donate to the Vancouver Food Bank.  Every week the food bank helps feed up to 28000 people in our community.  Many of those people are children.  Please help your child participate in this worthwhile and important event by sending him/her to school with some non-perishable food (e.g. canned vegetables, pasta, peanut butter, etc.)  There will be a place to donate in every classroom.  Thank you!

AT this point the boxes have not arrived, so we are just collecting on the carpet where we sit.
Thank you for your support!

Thank you's to:
1. Blakes dad (Gord) who has been coming in to listen to the kids read. If you would like to do this, you will be welcommed as well.
2. A continuing thank you to the lunch parents...and the lunch parent volunteers. It really helps keep the children on track with the eating.
3. To Peter (Fletchers dad) for donating a camera to the classroom for our photography lessons for the grade 2's starting this Friday. Maybe later for the grade ones????

Finally,
Please remember to have shoes to change into if your child is wearing rubber boots to school.
It is very yucky outside and the boots tend to track more stuff in than shoes do.

matthew the student of the week last week.

Thank you for reading this and have a great rest of the week.

Hello Parents,

It was great to start the day off with a run. Many of the children ran THREE laps around the school! They came back into class energized and ready for the day.

We are beginning to talk about nouns and where to find them in our writing. The students had fun coming up with persons, places and things. They too enjoyed correcting our new beloved doggy puppet (who we have to name) on where to find persons, places and things. He’s still learning and will need their support.

Patterns were continued in math. All students worked on pattern trains using the alphabet. Grade 1’s also worked in small groups finding the core of a pattern and predicting what terms continue that pattern. Grade 2’s worked on describing patterns in terms of changing shapes, sizes, colour and direction.

As a class we read and discussed what it means to make and be a friend. They shared ideas of inclusion, sharing, complimenting and the making of gifts to show affection. The students expressed their ideas in ‘talking bubbles’. These ideas were further reinforced as we went outside for a 20 minute breather. Students were frontloaded about the ideas of friendship first and then on their own or with some direction used these strategies for friendship making on the playground. It was a profound experience watching your children approach classmates they are not accustomed to playing with and tell them:

“I think you did a great job in your work today.”   (in reference to a worksheet a student was working on)
“Do you want to play with me?”
“There is room.”   (This was said when the tire swing was full but the students squished to make room for one more)

That is all for now.
See you next week.

Hi Parents,
Well I think Fall is officially here...the rain is falling, the heaters are on, the squirrels are running everywhere and we are starting to bunker down with our cozy blankets and sweaters!! Brrrrr.
Having said that it is now time to think about the rainy weather! We as a staff still strongly believe that the children should be outside getting some fresh air, even if it is wet fresh air...but we do not want them getting sick because of them not wearing appropriate gear. So, it is the time to make sure that they have rain jackets with hats and boots for puddles and a change of clothes, in the events that the rain sneaks under all of their appropriate outer wear! Also, it is very important that they all then have indoor shoes to change into so that they do not get our carpet wet and muddy. WE do a ton of work on the carpet and this will ensure that our carpet stays clean.Thank you for that. And that is my inspirational message for the morning...now for all the things that we have done this week!!
The Terry Fox run was a success! Thank you to the parents who cheered on our children as they ran loop after loop around the school. They were soooo excited and sooo positive about their running. We had watched a video on Terry Fox and really talked about what an inspiration he was to all of us and how he is truly one of Canadians heros. The children wrote about him afterwards and did a great job. I will include a picture of it in this blog. Thank you to all that donated to the Terry Fox fund. As a school we collected $725 dollars. That is almost a hundred dollars more than we collected last year. Yippee for Bayview families!!
This week we had our guest gardener in. For the last maybe five years we have had Catriona, a former Bayview parent who now works as a school and garden coordinator educator for SPEC. She is passionate about environmental education and organic gardening and loves to enthuse the kids about the amazing world of plants. She will be doing 6 or 7 lessons over the year of which the first one we had was this past Thursday. She talked to the kids about mulching and how important it was to mulch a garden and get it ready for the spring. We looked at the different types of mulches and then she took them out in small groups of 4 or 5 to clean out our garden beds (which is at the back of the church across the street) and plant some cover crops. Catriona was especially proud of all the children with their enthusiasm to try curly kale, some raw broccoli and the chives that are growing there. Later on we will be asking for a financial contribution to keep our garden growing and for paying Catriona for her wonderful gardening workshops.
We have had a busy week in the classroom as you can see. We have continued on with our printing and spelling program and I was very proud of the excellent results on the spelling test that all the children had on Friday before the Terry Fox Run. Thank you for reinforcing their spelling at home. The home reading is also coming along very nicely. Please continue to try to read every night and return the books every morning. for a teacher/volunteer assisted exchange. If the book that your child is way tooooo easy, write me a note or send me an email, or have your child talk to me about it and we will move them up a level. We do want them to read what they love to and are capable of reading!
We did our second Todd Parr lesson this week. We talked about who Todd Parr was and how unique his art was. Did you know he puts noses on animals but not on humans??? We will be continuing on with our Todd Parr unit in a team teaching capacity with Super Y in the library. That is very exciting!!
WE are still doing our Student of the week and this week it was Katelyn. Katelyn did an excellent job of expressing her likes and interests and is a very good public speaker. Kudos to Katelyn. WE are working on her book right now.
Finally  a big thank you to everyone coming out to the meet the teacher open house. It was great meeting you!

BEFORE I SIGN OFF THIS LONG NEWSY LETTER:
I had an oopsy daisy...our two week old electric sharpener went crashing to the floor the other day....it truly was an accident...just wondering if anyone has a good used electric sharpener that they might want to donate to our class? We are currently writing with very dull pencils...argh!
Katelyn, our student of the week! So beautiful!!
And with that,
Such a beautiful job Macy!
Thankyou and have a great weekend,
Terry Fox is our hero!

Happy First Day of Fall!!!!
Finally, I have the blog up and running...sorry it has taken me soooo long to get it going. Thank you Jennifer King for starting us off and doing such a wonderful job of your entries...I hope to do as wonderful job as her!

Well we have had a wonderful two weeks at school. I have so enjoyed meeting and getting to know all the children as well as getting to meet and get to know some of the new parents...as well as reestablishing hugs and contacts with my former parents....a big welcome to everyone!

We have been busy in the classroom for the past few weeks getting to know each other as well as getting to know the classroom rules and expectations. Over the two weeks, the children have learned how to give me five on the carpet, how to bee safe, bee fair and bee kind...ALWAYS!! (whether that be in the classroom, in the gym or out on the playground). We have worked very hard at remembering that when it is work time, we work, when it is eating time, we eat and then when it's play time we play nicely! So far everyone is trying very hard to remember all these rules and expectations.

We have slowly been establishing some daily activities and expectations as each day goes on. The children know that in the morning, if they have something on their desk, that they do it. They are learning to take their home reading bag out of their back pack in the morning so they can do their home reading with me later on.They are remembering to line up after school and collect all their paperwork from their mail boxes before they go home. Do you see how much they have to remember? And with all that they are doing great. I must do a very big thank you to all my grade 2's, they have been remarkable at helping out all the new and younger classmates. They have been phenomenal!!!

This last week we have been writing about the classmates in our attempt to get to know each other better.
So far we know Ms. Taylor very well, got to know Gavin and Samuel. We have worked on a sheet of writing which I have turned into a booklet that is being sent home with all the kids so they can share it with their family and then return. Over the next few months we will be doing at least one child a week, so it may be a little while before your child has a turn, but they will get a turn! Thank you for supporting them in their selections of items to bring to school.

I will try to write a weekly blog with updates and reminders so if you ever have any questions, please either email or talk to me in person and I will try very hard to clear up any confusion.
And with that, enjoy your sunday and next i will be listing some reminders for everyone.

REMINDERS:
1. Please send back all the student verification forms and the 25 dollars for the school fees as soon as possible.
2. Tomorrow is our Picture Day, please come with big smiles, and clean faces!
3. Please encourage your child to bring back their home reading every single day, so important for the growth of their reading level.
4. Open House/Meet the Teacher this coming Wednesday at 5:00 pm (i think that's the time). I look forward to seeing everyone!

FINALLY:
1. A big thank you to all my lunch moms and lunch dads who are coming in everyday at lunch time to supervise the nutrional intake of the children in the class...they are sooo able to work in the afternoons because of this program. I so appreciate you all!
2. I love volunteers, so if you would like to sign up for a time to volunteer, you would also be very appreciated. I definitely am looking for two more grade one moms to help with the cooking program which will be on Fridays from after recess to lunch. If you can help Matthews mom (Tania) out, that would be great!
3. Also a thank you to all the parents who contributed cleaning supplies and bags and kleenex to the classroom. I sure appreciate it very much.
This is ME...showing how to do the sharing project...am not photogenic, so please ignore that!!! yuck!!
This is Samuel sharing his passions with us!
