Hello Parents,
It was great to start the day off with a run. Many of the children ran THREE laps around the school! They came back into class energized and ready for the day.
We are beginning to talk about nouns and where to find them in our writing. The students had fun coming up with persons, places and things. They too enjoyed correcting our new beloved doggy puppet (who we have to name) on where to find persons, places and things. He’s still learning and will need their support.
Patterns were continued in math. All students worked on pattern trains using the alphabet. Grade 1’s also worked in small groups finding the core of a pattern and predicting what terms continue that pattern. Grade 2’s worked on describing patterns in terms of changing shapes, sizes, colour and direction.
As a class we read and discussed what it means to make and be a friend. They shared ideas of inclusion, sharing, complimenting and the making of gifts to show affection. The students expressed their ideas in ‘talking bubbles’. These ideas were further reinforced as we went outside for a 20 minute breather. Students were frontloaded about the ideas of friendship first and then on their own or with some direction used these strategies for friendship making on the playground. It was a profound experience watching your children approach classmates they are not accustomed to playing with and tell them:
“I think you did a great job in your work today.” (in reference to a worksheet a student was working on)
“Do you want to play with me?”
“There is room.” (This was said when the tire swing was full but the students squished to make room for one more)
That is all for now.
See you next week.
Mrs. Jennifer King
