Good Morning Everyone,
We have had a great and productive week at school. It is a difficult time for everyone as everyone is getting to know each other and easing back into a full week of school. We have tired minds and bodies...but with that said, everyone is doing so well and has such great attitudes!!
This blog is intended to keep you all up to date on what we are doing in class and reminders for what is coming up and what is needed in class. I will try not to be too wordy..please even just skim through the information..but do stop and take a look at the pictures..the children love it too!
With that being said...have a great weekend and I will see you all next week.

Important dates coming up:
Thursday, September 28th is Bayview Open house and Meet the Teacher night. This is the opportunity to take a quick look into our classroom as well as then join the entire school in the gym for a quick introduction to the entire staff at Bayview and if you havent met the principal yet, Mrs. Biorn, you can do that too.

Friday, Sept 29th is the Terry Fox Run. The plan is to walk to Jericho Beach Park on Friday afternoon and then run for 30 minutes in the spirit of Terry Fox. We will be accepting donations for cancer research the entire week and are hoping that we will be able to collect a loonie from every child at Bayview to donate to his charity. If you would like to run with us, that would be wonderful. In the events of rain (torrential, not drizzle) we will still run but it will be our Off to a Running Start route, which is around the school. Please dress your child appropriately for this run...running shoes and raingear if necessary.

Reminders:
1. Please send the 20 dollars for the cooking program if you have not done so already. The grade one children have already made applesauce with the cooking mamas and have tried it as well. I can tell that we have a lot of foodies in this class already. Next week we will use the applesauce to make something equally delicious. It will be another group that will cook and we will rotate every week. This program is a valuable program that teaches the children so many things...sharing, turn taking, chemistry, math and so on. Besides it's fun!

2. Scholastic Book Orders should be in by Monday as I will be placing the order then. There are two ways to pay. One is registering online and paying directly to scholastic books and the other is to send a cheque with the order form.

3. Send in your verification forms that the office requires as soon as possible as the local walking forms are included in this and it is necessary for us as we will be walking to Jericho Beach next Friday.

With that,
enjoy the pictures and your weekend.

Our Self portraits in the style of Todd Parr

Working on an all about me, one of the units that we are doing in the library on Mondays with Ms. Whitelaw. This is also our day for taking out library books. So if your child finishes their book, have them return it by Mondays so they can take out new books to read.

Who is Todd Parr? He is an author and illustrator who loves mac and cheese. He also loves to write books about our differences, and what makes us feel good. Reading in the library..reading all books makes us feel good!

Snuggling plus playing outside...and many more...makes us feel good!

During the first week of school we talked about our feelings...Mr. T is continuing this topic during his Tuesday afternoon teaching times with the children. The focus this term for him is feelings...and empathy. If you understand how someone feels then you can have empathy and compassion for them. The children love the opportunity to learn from Mr. T...especially Ruby!

Learning how to be a good listener is very important. The children are learning to listen with all these parts of their body.

Come in and see if you can read this glyph and see if this really is your child!! They worked on this with a partner and then did some beautiful colouring of their name.

At Bayview we encourage the children to always BEE FAIR BEE SAFE AND BEE KIND...and it looks like we encourage them to drink swamp water..haha

This book was read to the children by Nikoo, our guest teacher on Wednesday morning.

This is Nikoo. She works with SPEC (Society Promoting Environmental Conservation). She has worked with Ms. Jung and I for many years. She joins us about 5 times a year to share her knowledge with gardening with us. On this day we went to our garden across the street at the church and we harvested some bean seeds...we made envelopes for them and our plan is to re plant them next spring and watch them grow into beautiful plants.

Today the children were little seeds sleeping in the ground.

And then when given water and sunshine grew to be big beautiful plants.

What a beautiful garden I have!

Good Morning Division 10 Parents,
I would like to congratulate everyone for making it through a full week of school! After such a lovely, warm, full summer I totally understand that coming back and being at school, focusing every day is very difficult....but we did it! And it went well!!

What a lovely class full of smiling, eager faces. I am so very lucky to be teaching these wonderful children. It is a grade 1/2 combined class. There are 12 grade two children and 8 grade one children.
In our class we have Paula who is a student, staff, support worker (SSSW). She supports students in the morning. In the afternoon we will be receiving someone else, but that placement has not yet been filled.

This last week we focused on getting to know each other, establishing class rules and expectations and learning some class routines. The grade two's who were in the class last year have been very valuable role models and leaders and have been eager to help and show the others where to put things, where to get things and appropriate listening behaviours while on the carpet. EXCELLENT!!

I will try to be blogging every week so you can keep track of things that are going on and what we are doing throughout the week, given that not everyone can come into the classroom on a weekly basis. So this is a great way to have a little peek into your child's week!

This last week:
Monday: We will be joining Ms.Whitelaw in the library every Monday afternoon for a book exchange plus a collaborative project that we may be working on the entire first term. Ms.Whitelaw and myself will be using the library and working on an all about ME theme. Our first lesson was really about the Library and how the library is a place to get books and appreciate the Love of Reading.....and as a springboard we listened to Todd Parr read his book "I love Reading"....(a youtube video).

Tuesday: We talked about Bee-ing Safe, Fair and Kind in the classroom, in the school and in the playground and then in the afternoon we began our Todd Parr unit and learned a little about Todd Parr..he loves mac and cheese. You can take a look at our bulletin board in the hallway to see their beautiful drawings.

Wednesday: We talked a little more about ourselves and paired up with another child and they got to know each other while making a paper doll of themselves, following a glyph of instructions. They turned out rather adorable and are inside the classroom for you to take a peak at.

Thursday: Lucky lucky us...Mr. A (the grade 4/5 teacher) will be in every Thursday morning to do music with the children....they sang their little hearts out, and this was followed immediately after by Mrs. Appleby who will be teaching the children Social Studies. They are starting a community unit, which is part of the grade 1/2 curriculum
.
Friday: We will always have Assembly every Friday morning. Make sure the children come upstairs first and drop off their back packs. If you happen to be late and we are not in the classroom, have your child come directly down to the gym and enter quietly. This is the day that we also have Buddies with our Buddy class (also Mr. A's class). After recess Mrs. Montagano (grade 5/6 teacher) joins our class to talk about the different virtues that the entire school focuses on. This month it is about Friendliness.

As you can see we have a busy week meeting many new teachers and doing many new activities.
All the teachers told me that they were happy to teach such wonderful children. Me too!!
A final note
We eat in our classroom on a daily basis, except if your child has a hot lunch. Then on hot lunch days the children will wash their hands and eat in the lunchroom and be dismissed from there. Otherwise the rest of the children will eat in the classroom with the supervision of one of our wonderful lunch parents (or grand parents). I encourage the children to eat a healthy and balanced lunch so that they have enough fuel to last them for the afternoon. I think some of them are having growth spurts and are eating all their lunches at recess...so maybe check with your child and see if you are packing them enough! If you can avoid packing candies and chocolates, I would appreciate it as this just gets their little bodies a little energetic for the afternoons. hahah.

With that,
Have a great Sunday and enjoy the rest of the day.
Usually I do not write as much...but today...well....I woke up early!!
