Good Morning Division 10 Parents,
I would like to congratulate everyone for making it through a full week of school! After such a lovely, warm, full summer I totally understand that coming back and being at school, focusing every day is very difficult....but we did it! And it went well!!

What a lovely class full of smiling, eager faces. I am so very lucky to be teaching these wonderful children. It is a grade 1/2 combined class. There are 12 grade two children and 8 grade one children.
In our class we have Paula who is a student, staff, support worker (SSSW). She supports students in the morning. In the afternoon we will be receiving someone else, but that placement has not yet been filled.

This last week we focused on getting to know each other, establishing class rules and expectations and learning some class routines. The grade two's who were in the class last year have been very valuable role models and leaders and have been eager to help and show the others where to put things, where to get things and appropriate listening behaviours while on the carpet. EXCELLENT!!

I will try to be blogging every week so you can keep track of things that are going on and what we are doing throughout the week, given that not everyone can come into the classroom on a weekly basis. So this is a great way to have a little peek into your child's week!

This last week:
Monday: We will be joining Ms.Whitelaw in the library every Monday afternoon for a book exchange plus a collaborative project that we may be working on the entire first term. Ms.Whitelaw and myself will be using the library and working on an all about ME theme. Our first lesson was really about the Library and how the library is a place to get books and appreciate the Love of Reading.....and as a springboard we listened to Todd Parr read his book "I love Reading"....(a youtube video).

Tuesday: We talked about Bee-ing Safe, Fair and Kind in the classroom, in the school and in the playground and then in the afternoon we began our Todd Parr unit and learned a little about Todd Parr..he loves mac and cheese. You can take a look at our bulletin board in the hallway to see their beautiful drawings.

Wednesday: We talked a little more about ourselves and paired up with another child and they got to know each other while making a paper doll of themselves, following a glyph of instructions. They turned out rather adorable and are inside the classroom for you to take a peak at.

Thursday: Lucky lucky us...Mr. A (the grade 4/5 teacher) will be in every Thursday morning to do music with the children....they sang their little hearts out, and this was followed immediately after by Mrs. Appleby who will be teaching the children Social Studies. They are starting a community unit, which is part of the grade 1/2 curriculum
.
Friday: We will always have Assembly every Friday morning. Make sure the children come upstairs first and drop off their back packs. If you happen to be late and we are not in the classroom, have your child come directly down to the gym and enter quietly. This is the day that we also have Buddies with our Buddy class (also Mr. A's class). After recess Mrs. Montagano (grade 5/6 teacher) joins our class to talk about the different virtues that the entire school focuses on. This month it is about Friendliness.

As you can see we have a busy week meeting many new teachers and doing many new activities.
All the teachers told me that they were happy to teach such wonderful children. Me too!!
A final note
We eat in our classroom on a daily basis, except if your child has a hot lunch. Then on hot lunch days the children will wash their hands and eat in the lunchroom and be dismissed from there. Otherwise the rest of the children will eat in the classroom with the supervision of one of our wonderful lunch parents (or grand parents). I encourage the children to eat a healthy and balanced lunch so that they have enough fuel to last them for the afternoon. I think some of them are having growth spurts and are eating all their lunches at recess...so maybe check with your child and see if you are packing them enough! If you can avoid packing candies and chocolates, I would appreciate it as this just gets their little bodies a little energetic for the afternoons. hahah.

With that,
Have a great Sunday and enjoy the rest of the day.
Usually I do not write as much...but today...well....I woke up early!!
