I hope everyone is still enjoying their weekend despite the rain.....ducks love the rain and actually so do I. So after I finish the blog...I'm off for a walk on the seawalll ( the North Van one) maybe I'll see you there??? Ha ha
First off I would like to thank all the parents who came for either the parent teacher or the student led conference last week. It was great seeing everyone and being able to tell you that your child is great. Everyone is making such great strides and amazing daily gains. I am proud of everyone. I hope you can see their improvement as well.
This week we continued our study of:
1. Owls----the parts of an owls body and what we found most interesting about these parts
2. Jan Brett--the author and illustrator with overflowing thoughts. She has so much to say that she needs borders and side columns to capture all of them. We have read a few books that include her love of Trolls. One of our activities was to design and create our own troll with unique troll names.
3. The grade two's baked pina colada muffins. Very yummy said most...some...well, not so much.
4. Meanwhile the grade one's learned how to make connections to a story by Jan Brett. Making connections is what differentiates a good reader from an excellent reader!
We also had the great opportunity to have Nikoo in again. Nikoo (from Spec) came in and we talked about Red Wigglers. The children created a Red Wiggler Worm Habitat. We now have classroom pets...1/4 pound of red wiggly worms. The children learned about the benefits of worms and how they compost fruits and vegies to create rich and healthy soil that we will be putting back into our school gardens. The children shredded newspaper, spritzed it with water, added our compost from our lunch, then our red wigglers and then topped it off with more newspaper and more water. Our red wigglers will be outside the classroom, by our cubby area. The children are asked not to peak inside as they are rather shy creatures. We will feed them once a week and then take a classroom peek. So please remind your child of that!
Reminders for the children:
1. Eating lunch in the classroom is a privilege. We are very lucky to have parents who will supervise the children while they eat their lunch. Please remind the children of appropriate behaviours such as eating their food, do not throw out their lunches, bring it home so you can decide what they do like to eat and do not. Some of the children are walking around and fooling around and not eating their lunch despite many reminders by the parents. I have told the children if they are not respectful to our volunteers then they will need to be eating lunch in the office. I would hate to do that.
2. Wear appropriate rain gear during these torrential days. Some of the children want to play outside (which I love) but are getting drenched! Then they are sitting on the carpet soaken wet and really not concentrating on anything but how wet they are.
I think that's all I have to say. Regular days next week...spelling continues on Monday, no early dismissals. Excellent pictures of our worm habitat to follow.
Take care,
Teri
Katelyn taking the challenge to read out loud to the class. She did a fantastic job!!
