It is delightful to see the sun shining this morning. Unfortunately I hear that the weather may be a little cloudy/rainy next week, so get out there and enjoy the sunshine!
Well we were lucky last week with the way the sunshine worked. We had a great beach clean up day. The sun shone down on us, we cleaned a lot of yucky cigarette butts off the beach and felt very good about giving back to our Earth. And the next day it rained, then came Friday and the weather although a little chilly and windy, was much better and we spent the morning at Kits Pool learning about water safety. What an excellent program!!! The children shivered and shook, but all listened soo well and learned soo much! I was very proud of their behaviour and their focus and the way they all tried so hard. I have pictures of both events.
On Friday we also said goodbye to Ms. Fuster. Ms. Fuster was a visiting Student Teacher from Appenzell, Switzerland. She spent three weeks in the classroom helping out and learning and even doing a little bit of teaching. She will be travelling in Canada for another month before returning to Switzerland. We loved having her with us and wish her the very best luck with her teaching in Switzerland.
We are quickly coming to an end to our year and so I will give you a quick outline of some of our wonderful activities that we will be doing to finish our year off. (We will continue to be doing all of our core curricular activities on a daily basis, but will augment it with some little special activities as well)
June 14th....for all children who participated in any sport or athletic activity (track, cross country) you will have received a letter from Ms. Hinds...so on this day there will an Athletic Banquet, which often runs into the afternoon. On this day those children who have received an invite, do not need to bring their lunch.
June20th....We will be going to the beach in the afternoon to do a Beach Art Project in the style of Andy Goldsworthy...quote:I enjoy the freedom of just using my hands and “found” tools – a sharp stone, the quill of a feather, thorns. I take the opportunities each day offers: if it is snowing, I work with snow, at leaf-fall it will be with leaves; a blown-over tree becomes a source of twigs and branches. I stop at a place or pick up a material because I feel that there is something to be discovered. Here is where I can learn.” -Andy Goldsworthy
I will take pictures of their creations. If there are any parents who would like to join us for the walk and supervision, that would be great! Let me know.
June 21st. ....The grade 2/3 math students have been working on learning about money, how to count money, how to give change, how to add different denominations together and meanwhile the grade ones (wiht Ms. Jung) have also just started a money unit. So, on this day we thought it would be fun to have a BAKE SALE...where all the grade 2's will be asked to bring in one dozen of cupcakes, muffins or large cookies, or rice krispy squares...something that we could sell for a dollar each and we would then set up our little shop in the classroom and sell our food. The grade ones from ms. jungs class (and ours) would come shopping. Our children would be allowed to shop as well, if there was anything left. So, Im hoping that for this day, the children could all bring in something for them to sell. We plan to count the money after, talk about what we could buy with it, how much those things woudl cost and have a little party in the last week of school. If you have any questions about this, let me know!
June 22nd...the Vancouver Public Library will be coming to do a summer reading presentation at Bayview in the afternoon
June 23rd...we will be harvesting our spuds and having a little spud fest feast...maybe some kale salad as well..yumm
June 26th or June 27th...Beach Day...if the Monday is hot and sunny we will be going to the beach...if it is not, then we will have our class party with the funds we have earned from our bake sale...if and visa versa...so one of the two days will be Beach Day and one will be party day...
June 28th....half a day classroom clean up and half a day might also be a beach day...
June 29th Last day of school. Assembly in the gym with slide show. Bubble gum chewing in the classroom...I know, they love this...and dancing and loud music...thats what they love!
Okay...Im not sure what else..but if there is more, I will send it to you again. Im sorry this was very long...and now for the pictures..they are great!
