Good Morning,
I hope everyone enjoyed their long, four day weekend. Just to be with your family, walk along the beach, watch some movies and snuggle...thats what I love the longer weekends for. A time to just be together! I hope you had that time!
For all of you that were able to come to our Remembrance Day assembly..thank you for coming. I hope you enjoyed all the presentations, as the children at Bayview all worked very hard to make it so successful. The artwork and the writing was all done over the week. During this week all the teachers spent time talking about Peace and how we are a lucky country to live in and how as people and citizens of the country we would like to see Peace continue. We also talked about our wonderful world that we live in and how to keep it wonderful and beautiful and safe. All the actions that we do now will help our country in the future. I was very proud of our children. They worked very hard at the Poppy Procession. They were so well behaved, listened well and took the entire assembly very seriously. What a wonderful group of children.

Also on Wednesday we had the opportunity to have a guest speaker come in, Shane Pointe. Shane is an employee for the UBC hired to talk to groups of children about the indigenous people of Canada. Shane is from the Coast Salish Band and is an Elder of the Band. He calls himself a Knowledge Keeper. He shared some stories of the past with the children and talked a little bit about Potlaches and the traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. He encouraged the children to ask many questions. The children had a lot to ask him. We will be writing little thank you letters to Shane and telling him what we have learned.

Because we had a busy day of assembly, dance practice and then guest visitor, we missed our spelling test. So just a heads up...the children will be getting their little spelling test on Monday...maybe review the words with them.Memorization plays a part in the spelling process, but it is not the only nor the most critical part of my program. During the teaching of spelling we work on rhyming words, chunks of words, patterning of words, little words inside of big words, learning how to use the words in our writing, reading the words and so on.Thank you for your support.

Starting this next week we will be beginning an author study...we will be looking at the books by Phoebe Gilman and doing a little mini unit on  Jillian Jiggs..the maker of wonderful pigs. We will take a look at this engaging character and perhaps maybe even make our own little pigs!
We will also be starting our new science unit...matter.
If you have any books on matter, on pigs...feel free to share with us.

So just a few final reminders

1) During the rainy days...children who come in boots...should have indoor shoes to change into.
2) Healthy snacks for recess, something to keep them going for the rest of the afternoon. Thank you for being mindful about not sending their Halloween treats to school as a snack.
3) Any leftover Halloween candy will still be collected this week in our classroom. I will be delivering the box to the Shelter on Friday.

With that, life is going great!
We have a happy and healthy classroom.
I love it!!
Enjoy your Sunday and I will see you on Monday!

Shane Pointe, the keeper of knowledge.
