Good Morning Everyone
I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful fall days that we had this last week. The sun shone all weekend which made for some lovely walks outside and was a perfect opportunity to look at leaves and trees!
We have been enjoying our Eric Carle Unit. He has written so many books that have been spring boards for many of our first lessons. This week the children listened to a book called The Grumpy Ladybug. Then we wrote two word poems that told the readers things that made them grumpy. Sorry dads, but the most common one was "yelling dads!". That makes my children grumpy as well. It was a hard task thinking of how to say it only in two words..but they did it. Take a read, they are quite funny.

We will continue to appreciate Eric Carle books but will now be moving to a Fall unit and will be specifically looking at trees and leaves. We will look at differentiating trees...deciduous/ coniferous and then look at leaves, parts of leaves, how they change colours etc. If you have any wonderful books that you would like to send in...then that would be great. We will be starting on Monday with a book ( a very old book from my childhood called "I like Trees").

This last week we had Deana (our school indigenous teacher) come in and start our fall unit off by reading a book and showing a little power point on how the first nations prepare for the winter...the things they do in the fall hunting, fishing, drying and harvesting, help them survive through the winter. The children wrote and drew afterwards, also displayed outside of the classroom.

The children have been working hard at being independent workers. They are realizing the importance of reading and writing. They are encouraged to sound out their words as they write and are getting much more accustomed to this expectation. Practicing this at home should always be a part of the 20 minute reading. I know that the little books that they take home does not account for the entire 20 minutes...so throw in some sight word practice, some writing sentences together or drawing and labelling pictures together. All that practice will allow them more confidence when they come into the classroom.

Finally, we have been talking about healthy eating. That healthy snacks at recess will help their brain and body function easier throughout the day. Please discuss healthy snack options such as fruit, vegies, cheese, crackers, granola bars, yogurt, pizza, peanut butter etc. Thank you for your support.

I have taken a few pictures of the children throughout the week, please enjoy!
Any questions...please feel free to come in and ask.
Have a great Sunday!

Deana reads a book about Fall to the children.

On a daily basis the children read to each other, using our home reading books. First one re-reads their book and then the other partner does. They listen to each other, they help each other they compliment each other and then exchange their books for another one to read to their parents.

A born teacher.

On Friday I told them the story of Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent loved to paint sunflowers and would spend hours and hours on the hills painting his beloved flowers. So we drew in black pastel and then we used the tempera paints to create our own sunflower paintings.
