Happy Thanksgiving to all my families!
I am so thankful this weekend for the lovely fall weather that we are getting, giving us the opportunities to go outside and enjoy each other! I am thankful for my family, who I love unconditionally and I am very thankful for the wonderful group that I have been given to look after and teach this year. I adore their sparkle, their energy and their delight in learning! Thank you!
I have enjoyed this last week at school as we spent lots of time talking about things that we are thankful for, watching some videos and presentations on thankfulness and getting to spend lots of time outdoors doing our nature studies.
This weeks focus was the sunflower plant. I brought in some seeds from home as well as old, spent sunflower plants that we looked at. We went for walks around our school and across the street where there were beautiful big sunflower plants growing. We had the luck of the neighbor coming and talking to us a little bit about his sunflower plants. Piya wondered if you plant a small seed will you get a smaller sunflower plant? The children had the opportunity to take their clip boards and sketch the plants and lable their plants. We learned about their life cycle and then did some sunflower art.
Besides spending time outdoors, we also worked on our reading, writing and math. The grade ones are really working hard at becoming independent at sounding out. Please continue to work on this at home with them, review their letters and the sounds that they make. Go over the few spelling words that they are working on (I, a, an, see, can) and read daily.
The grade two’s are becoming very good role models and are so helpful and kind to their younger classmates. They are listening to them read and helping them figure out what to do when they are confused. Continue to practice their spelling words at home..this will help solidify their writing as well as help them with their reading. I know that the words that I am sending home are fairly simple, but remember all these simple words are often “root” words in bigger words. Even in grade two they get confused with what the different vowels “say”, so this is the reviewing period.
Next week we will be a shorter week.
There will be new spelling words on Tuesday and a little quiz on Friday. It is a non stressful little quiz, given one to one so as not to worry the children.
We will also be looking at garlic. We will be looking at the life cycle of the garlic, looking at how each clove can grow into a bigger head of garlic and then planting some cloves and in the spring see the fruits of our labour!! I will be bringing in some garlic, some soil and some pots for us to plant in. Unfortunatly our large planter box outside of Queen E was taken down as it was in such a state of disrepair. Hopefully the tubs will work for garlic, it did for potatoes!
I took a lot of pictures. I hope you enjoy them. I told the children you would show them to them! Have a great weekend and enjoy your feasts!
Love,
Teri
