Good Morning everyone! I hope everyone has had a good weekend and has tried to get outside while the sun was shining (Saturday!) We had a busy week last week and were able to get outside for a lovely outdoor nature walk on Wednesday afternoon. One of the things we talked about was the colour GREEN and how our eye/brain is able to pick up and recognize so many different shades of green. More than in any colour on the colour wheel. We learned that it gives plants the green colour and that plants use chlorophyll and the sunshine to give them energy. So on Wednesday afternoon we walked into the forest and looked at things that were green. They were soo excited to see so many variations of green. Then we found a "sit spot" and we sat for five minutes...with no talking, no hands up, no communication with the teacher or others and just looked and listened for five whole minutes. For some five minutes of no movement was very difficult, and for some they realized that during this five minutes they could just sit and be and enjoy and appreciate what they have around them. They could hear better. The birds were singing so sweetly! And it actually sounded soo loud. AFter our five minutes of enjoying the silence and surrounding, the children were tasked with finding five things that were green (natural things) and items that were already on the ground. We came inside after our walk and drew what we found, using many greens to create our nature items. It was a wonderful afternoon. This week we also learned about the Lunar New Year. We read some books, did some writing and poetry, watched some Lunar New Year celebrations around the world and did some art to celebrate Lunar New Year. It is the year of the OX. With the grade two's we have started a program called coding. Learning how to make an algorithm with paper. This is something new for me and quite exciting. Ms. Jung is sharing her knowledge with me and I am learning while teaching it to the grade twos. Ask your child about the snowman coding that we did. Both grade ones and twos will be continuing on our measuring unit as well as with basic math skills during the week. Every day is a busy day filled with reading, writing, and math and art and joy and laughter! It is too bad that we arent able to have you in the class to share it with us. I hope that the pictures show you how much fun we are having as we learn. Thankyou for all your support and for sharing your joy with your children. Have a great day. And i hope to see all the children on Monday. Teri
