Good Morning everyone! What a lovely morning! The sky is so blue!! Fills my bucket! So will you be watching the Super Bowl today? I watch every year, because it is my excuse to eat copious amounts of Nachos and chicken wings. Once a year is fine right??? haha My belly will be still full tomorrow. Speaking of full....
We had a very full week. The children were busy learning about: Groundhogs Day (yay, the groundhog did not see his shadow...spring is on its way!!), learning how to measure using non-standard tools. We went out into the forest and we used sticks to measure things. Then we discussed why we do NOT use non-standard measurements when we measure items. We will continue to measure things over the next few months, using standard and non-standard tools. We also did a STEM project. STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including: problem solving. creativity. critical analysis. The children were given toothpicks, marshmellows, and a piece of cardboard and then were told only one thing..use all your materials to create a shelter for your polar/spirit bear. The creations were so different. Some children had a plan right away. Some needed to think a while. Some got frustrated, and some did not. It was an interesting project. We will likely be doing STEM projects twice a month. This week we have also be reading and talking about Black History month. WE have read some beautiful stories. Ms. Biorn also came in to read a very beautiful book. Many conversations have been spent talking about racism and being anti-racist. WE talk about how the colour of your skin, should not matter, it is who and what you are in the inside. The children have been very conscious and respectful of each other. I am very proud of how all of them are with each other and about their insightful comments that they make when we read the multicultural books.WE are still learning about bears and are quite the experts on polar and spirit bears...next week..its the grizzly!!
This week we also worked on our core activities..reading, writing and arithmetic...we read poems and practiced poems. We did some beautiful heart art and just had a great week! Gosh our weeks are flying by!! I can't even believe that it will be Spring Break soon..
Next week is a short week as February 12th is a professional day for the teachers. Thus we will be celebrating Valentine's Day on February 11th. ON this day your child should bring their cards and whatever else they want to give out and we will be handing them out on the afternoon of the 11th. If your child is writing out cards, please make sure that everyone gets one. I know I don't even have to say that, but I do. WE do talk about this with the children all the time
And with that..enjoy the pictures. Show them to your children, talk about them. Just looking at the pictures with your child will help prompt them for information about their week and the activities that they are doing! And as always, if you have any questions or comments to make, feel free to email me!
Take care and have a great day!
