Good Morning Everyone!
Its looking like another lovely day outside...a great day for more gardening!!! I have been hearing the kids tell me about things that they have eaten from their gardens ALREADY!! And how big their pea plants are growing and their beans!! Yay!
We have been doing a lot of field trips to our garden at the church. And in fact we have been having outdoor school there. It has been lovely to work outside as we write about our gardens or our butterflies. We planted beets outside last week and they are sprouting..as the children each planted some beets, they wrote about the health benefits of beets and did a little bit of weeding and a little bit of watering as well...the whole afternoon was spent in the sunshine and doing our work. Their faces were sooo happy and their attitudes so positive..where was my camera????

This last week we talked about the last two stages of our butterfly...the chrysalis stage and then the butterfly stage. We learned that the butterfly only lives for two to four weeks in the butterfly stage so we felt the urgency for us to study them and release them so they could have a few weeks out in our beautiful earth. We released the butterflies at the church so they could visit our garden there as well! Some beautiful pictures of our butterflies and our growing plants in the garden.

This last week we also had Deana come in and we finished off talking about the last part of our cycle...SUMMER. The children did an amazing job of their writing and drawing and most of their projects are posted outside the door. Thank you so much to Deana for inspiring the children as well as creating such an interest in the First Nations Culture. In fact Nina took it upon herself to do a book talk called I am not a number  she told the children the story about the residential schools...she showed the pictures as she talked about the book. Many children said afterwards how interesting this was and how sad it made them feel. The children are wanting  to read the story now, so Nina has left the book behind for those who are keen. We were all so very impressed by Nina's story telling skills.

On Friday we had our first Purple Dragon visit. Senpei Martina was our instuctor. She was fantastic. The children were even better! We walked their quickly (had to be on time) there was no fussing or fooling around...we were all very focussed! The time went by so fast as Senpei Martina taught them many self defense skills. I took the brochure from the office and was impressed by one line that they use as their mantra..."helps youth focus their energy and resist negative peer pressures" and isnt that what we want for our children? The philosophy is taught with humour and kindness yet focussing on discipline! Was amazing...I have some pictures for you as well. If your child didnt get to go this week, there are three more sessions. Please make sure that your child is wearing shows that they will not get blisters in when walking there. Sandals can cause tripping when they walk as well as blisters. Running shoes are definitely the best choice.

On Thursday we will be going on a field trip to UBC gardens to visit the Bumblebees. I will send more information out on Wednesday as a reminder that we need our carseats on that day. We will be leaving in the morning and will be back by lunch. It is at the UBC farms. For drivers there is parking right outside of the farm, where one puts in their license plate number and will get the first two hours of parking free. I hope the weather is as lovely as it was this last week!

In math we are all starting the measuring unit. Ms. Craig, my former teaching partner comes in to assist in this. WE have been doing a lot of measuring! The children are learnign about standard forms of measuring and non-standard forms of measuring. On Tuesday we will work in teams to measure our bodies!

The classroom has been a busy busy place to beeeeee in...and this week will be no difference. Lots of learning goes on...and this week  we learn a little bit about beeeeeees...before we go on our fieldtrip.

With that..i am off to garden.
Have a great day,
Enjoy the pictures.
See you on Monday.
