Todays blog is one day late!! Im so sorry, but i left my camera back at school and i had sooo many wonderful pictures, that I thought I would wait a day. Thank you for being so patient!
This last week was a week of gardening and planting. We have been learning about plants and how they work....roots down, stems up, leaves to collect the sunlight and turn them into sugar for the plant to grow. Last week we planted lettuce and tomatoes and learned all about them. The children then are to write about these plants and their healthy benefits. As soon as they grow bigger and the weather is not as "rainy" we will plant them out in our garden at the church. The children have so enjoyed the planting and the learning about all the benefits of these plants.
This last week we also had Deana in to talk about how the first nations people prepare for Spring and all the activities that the indigenous people participate in as they move from their winter home to their spring home.
April is Poetry month. That means we will be doing much more poetry in class. This last week I read them the story about an Eagle. The eagle was telling the story. Afterwards the children did an acrostic poem called the Eagle. I was so very impressed by their story telling in their poetry. The children will be listening to stories that are mainly indigenous stories and we will use that as our spring board for the different poems that we do. The children are very excited about all the poetry that they will be doing.
Mrs. Appleby is giving the children double blocks of Social Studies this term. They have just finished learning about their own community and now will be learning about communities around the world. The children made their own passports and will be travelling first to France and learning all about the culture, food, and important facts from France and doing some writing about that. They will use the ipad to gather information. We will be making Crepes to compliment this part of the unit. YUM!!!
Speaking of cooking we have been making different types of Irish Soda Bread. We have made the traditional style, a multigrain style, and next we will be making a sweetened bread. So far the winner of the taste tests is the traditional style. Thank you to my moms who come in weekly to work on the delicious food with the children. The children absolutely love cooking and are learning so much. I cant wait till we make the crepes!!
Thank you for supporting your children in their wacky hair day. They thought it was so funny to see everyone all "haired up!!"" Even my volunteers Abi and Katie got into the spirit!!
Coming soon, we will be having High Tech High Touch coming in to do a handson program with the children. The program will be Flash, Bang© (What’s that noise, where is that light coming from? Learn about the properties of light and sound energy as we use our eyes and ears to help us understand where they start, and how they change and interact with the world around us. This is one of the curriculum expectations and what a fun way to cover this. Thank you to the PAC who have given each classroom money to fund special activities like this. We will be having this program on Friday April 27th...so dont go away this day!!
Coming up this week:
