It sounded and looked like everyone had a great holiday! The stories that children shared, the rested and relaxed little faces all sitting on the carpet with their little faces looking up at me so ready and eager to learn! How exciting!! I had a lovely rest myself, loved all the sunshine in Cabo...and definitely recommend going there! Full on seven days of sunshine. Looking forward to some of that sunshine here as well!!
With all this rain, just another reminder that children should be dressing appropriately for rainy days. They are asked to go outside for some fresh air, so should have appropriate footwear and jackets with hoods. Many are coming inside after their play time and wanting to take off their shoes as their little feet are wet. I cannot have them walking around without any shoes on for safety reasons, so please either have another pair of shoes in their backpack or have them have boots to change in and out of! April showers bring May flowers...this saying seems spot on right now!
This past week flew by as we only had four days. We did spelling..but did not do our spelling test...so we will do our spelling test on Monday , maybe a quick review of the words would be helpful. The grade twos started their new unit in math of looking at tens and ones to understand the concept of double digit adding. We will be continuing working on this concept without regrouping and then with regrouping which will then lead us to subtracting double digit numbers. Feel free to practice this at home.
The grade ones continue to work on number families and are getting very good at figuring out what three numbers have in common (2, 5, 7) and how to write four number stories with those numbers.
In science we will be doing lots of fun activities. We will be continuing to learn about night and day...and the phases of the moon. We will be doing TONS of gardening and learning about plants. In fact we have planted our spuds in tubs already (thank you to Theo's mom, Jo) who helped with our tubs. On Wednesday we planted Warba potatoes. We will watch them grow inside and then in May once they are ready, we will be taking them outside to our church garden to grow until June..when we will harvest them. We also planted some lettuce, which is sprouting like mad, and some more eggshell seeds (onions), and our earlier eggshell seedlings are needing transplanting. We certainly have a class of green thumbs!!
Mrs. Appleby has completed one part of the Social Studies curriculum..what makes our community special. The children worked on making brochures. They are up in the classroom now. She will continue working with the children on creating Passports! The children are excited about this. They will be using the IPAD to gather information. Ask your child about what they are doing. I am sure they would love to tell you themselves. They are very keen on this project!
Mrs. Montagano came in on Friday and talked about respect. That is the virtue for this month. The children did a little drawing about their take on being respectful. Perhaps that too could be a discussion at home, working on being respectful not only to people but to property and animals and nature!
On Friday we made some beautiful paper blossoms to hang in our classroom..to show that Spring indeed has arrived.
Have a great day and I will see everyone tomorrow!
Enjoy the pictures!

This is our lettuce...soon we will be transplanting this into little pots as well.
The plants have certainly grown and need to be put into bigger pots. I think the light from the windows has definitely helped the growth spurt over spring break!
This is how we planted our spuds in tubs!
